Ohio became the first Technology-First state in the country in 2018 through an Executive Order issued by Governor Kasich. Tech First encourages using technology to help people with disabilities live more independently. Before choosing in-person support, people with disabilities and their teams should first see if technology, like smart home devices, video check-ins, or communication tools, can meet the person’s needs. This approach gives people more freedom while still keeping them safe and supported.
Ohio’s Technology First initiative promotes the use of technology to help people with developmental disabilities live more independently and reduce reliance on in-person support. This aligns with the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities’ mission to support individuals in achieving their full potential and vision of an inclusive community. By embracing technology, the board can enhance opportunities for individuals to live, learn, work, and thrive in their communities.
Waiver Services available:
- Assistive Technology: Assistive Technology Service provides special devices or tools to help people with disabilities live more independently. The goal is to make daily tasks easier and improve safety and independence.
- Remote Support: Remote Support Service helps people with disabilities live more independently by using technology. Caregivers can check in and assist through video calls, sensors, or other remote tools instead of being there in person all the time. This service helps keep people safe while giving them more freedom.
- Healthcare Assessment: Health Care Assessment Service, gives people with disabilities access to specially-trained doctors through video calls. This service helps diagnose health issues, provide medical advice, and reduce the need for emergency room visits. It ensures quick and convenient care from anywhere without replacing the person’s existing doctors.
