In 1987, President Reagan recognized March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month to increase “public awareness of the needs and the potential of Americans with developmental disabilities” and to provide the “encouragement and opportunities they need to lead productive lives and to achieve their full potential.”
I believe March was chosen as DD Awareness Month for the start of spring and the general feeling of potential and promise the beginning of the year brings.
At LCBDD, March often marks the start of a busy season of outreach and engagement with the families we support and the greater community and this year is no exception.
As our current three-year strategic plan comes to an end this year, our work continues to help people with disabilities discover, pursue and achieve what is important to them.
We have started the “discovery” phase of our new strategic plan with our Family Engagement Survey. I hope you take a few moments to complete it and help us understand what is important to you and how the Licking County Board of DD can help. Your voice matters!
Your feedback will help us set the priorities of our next three-year plan so we can continue to help families and people with disabilities pursue what is important to them. We will begin gathering additional information with small group discussions with families, internal staff surveys, and asking our local partners how we can continue to work well together.
Please join us for our big Summer Kickoff on May 2 at the Canal Market District where I hope to meet many of you and start those conversations on what is important to you and how we can help. I am excited for the potential 2026 and beyond has in store for our community.
