When Teri Nedderman moved to Newark from Vancouver, Washington, she didn’t know anyone in Licking County.
As they got settled in their new home, her niece Stacey John started looking for a senior center, where her aunt could meet some friends and have some fun.
On her first day at the Adult Day Center at the Licking County Aging Partners’ Heritage Hall, Teri, 74, met Margaret D’Ostroph — and they connected instantly.
They both loved doing puzzles, coloring and playing Yahtzee. But they also could relate to each other’s life experiences — both the joys and the challenges.
“She and Margaret hit it off,” Stacey said. “We started bringing her here and she’s just kind of flourished. It’s been a huge blessing.”
Licking County Aging Partners (LCAP) has partnered with the Licking County Board of Developmental Disabilities (LCBDD) for many years, supporting older adults who also have developmental disabilities.
The Board’s contract with LCAP allows people LCBDD supports in nursing homes and other facilities to have opportunities for socialization. Those who attend the LCAP Adult Day Center are also able to enjoy the activities offered at Heritage Hall, such as lunch, BINGO and exercise classes.
Margaret, 69, has been coming to LCAP five days a week for many years and feels like she’s a part of the fabric of the agency. She loves the activities and helping her fellow seniors.
The people at LCAP are important to her, because she doesn’t have many family members close by, she said.
“But now I do,” she said proudly pointing to Teri and Stacey. “They are the nicest people you have ever met.”
When Stacey — who lives with Teri — found out Margaret was going to be alone on Christmas, she invited her over for Chinese food and presents.
Now the two friends have traditions for holidays and look forward to going shopping or to dinner and the movies with Stacey. Margaret often comes over for barbeques and they recently took a trip to Amish country.
“We just hang out together and have a wonderful time,” Margaret said.
When asked about her favorite thing about coming to LCAP, Teri didn’t hesitate.
“It’s this person right here,” she said, grabbing Margaret’s hand.
They both feel grateful that LCAP brought them together.
“We will stick together like glue and we are going to be buddies for the rest of our lives,” Margaret said.
